Space Kitty Rescue looks like a tap-and-hope arcade flyer and plays like something considerably more demanding. The game hands you a rescue pod, a tractor beam and a galaxy full of stranded kittens, then quietly refuses to help you further. Everything below is what we learned about its systems over several evenings of testing on a mid-range Android handset.

The three systems that matter

Zero-G Drifting

Thrust adds momentum, releasing it does not remove momentum. Every approach has to be planned one screen ahead, because the pod keeps travelling long after your thumb has left the control.

Power-ups

Shields, speed boosts and time slowers appear rarely and never when convenient. Holding one back for a bad wave is usually worth more than spending it the moment it drops.

Cosmic inertia in practice

The flight model is the whole game. Your pod carries velocity in every direction you have ever pushed it, and the only way to cancel motion is to thrust against it. That turns a simple pickup into a two-part problem: line up the approach, then start braking before you think you need to. Players who come from tap-to-flap games spend their first ten minutes overshooting every single kitten, and then it clicks.

Once it clicks, the drift stops being an obstacle and becomes the tool. Long curved approaches let you sweep three pickups in one pass without touching the thrust again, which is where the mode's highest scores come from.

Reading the asteroid field

Hazards arrive in patterns rather than at random, and the patterns repeat often enough to be learned. Dense clusters almost always leave one clean lane, usually offset from the centre of the screen. The mistake is to treat the field as a wall and stop moving: a stationary pod in this game is a pod with no options, because you have no stored momentum to escape with.

The power-up economy

Drops are deliberately stingy. Over a long Classic Endless run we averaged one useful pickup every ninety seconds or so, which means a power-up is a resource, not a mechanic you can build a strategy around. Shields are best spent on entry into a dense sector rather than after the first hit; time slowers are worth saving for the moment three kittens appear on opposite sides of a crowded screen.

The difficulty curve

The first four or five sectors ramp gently, and then the game stops being polite. Hazard speed climbs on a fixed timer rather than in response to how well you are doing, so a strong run and a weak run reach the same wall at the same moment. That is the single sharpest edge in the design, and it is the main reason the score is 8.5 rather than higher.

PRO TIP: Don't rush blindly! Boosting into a cluster of asteroids just to grab one kitty can create a trap with no exit. Plan your flight trajectories carefully.
